Celebrating Tihar and Mha Puja on 20 Oct 2017

Tihar (Dewali) and Mha Puja 

Himalayan Restaurant would like to invite you to our traditional "Tihar" (“Diwali”) festival in traditional Himalayan style. We would like to gather everyone to a sumptuous gathering with some cultural activities.

There will be “rangoli”, colorful patterns of art on the floor and “diya”, lights displays in the restaurant. We would like to invite everyone to come and witness Himalayan traditions and customs on this festive season.

These are the following activities that will take place:

A mandala will be laid out where each participant can do Mha puja in traditional Newa way. Mha puja, the worship of the inner self, is very unique to Newa ethnic group in Nepal. Newars... (Newa group people) believe that one needs to understand and respect oneself before he/she can understand others. Mha Puja is purification, strengthening and understanding of oneself.

Each participant will receive a puja set with authentic items from Nepal:

Itaa (oiled strand of strings)
Potaye (yellow mustard powder)
Abhir (vermilion powder)
Rice
Gweswaan (flowers)
Taye (popped rice)
Dhun and Dhupayen (special incense of local variety)
Rice lump
Egg
Yogurt
Fish
Meat
Wine (liquor)
Jajanka (it is made of many rounds of a white cotton thread forming a circle of about two feet in diameter and tied with small piece of red cloth in order to have no ends)
Fruits
Walnuts
Sweets
Tahsi(fruit has thin skin and provides tasty sweet and sour fruit)
Singali (the local chestnut)
Aakhen (hand-milled rice)

All these items are an essential component of the puja ceremony and each item is of great spiritual significance. You will be given a brief background of each item during the puja ceremony.

After ceremony participants will be receive the puja sets in a traditional manner.

You will enjoy a special menu of:
1.Chiura or rice
2.Aloo Sadeko
3.Chicken Choyala
4.Mutton Curry
5.Plain Bara
6.Bhatmas Sadeko
7.Cucumber and Mulla Achar
8.Ginger Fried

Participation Fee:
- 480 Baht per person for non-members
- 380 Baht per person for student and restaurant members

The fee will include the special Tihar menu and puja set.
